Biography
Joined Google as a software engineer in January 2000. Wrote the first version of SafeSearch. Led the webspam team for roughly a decade, the entire Panda-Penguin era that shaped modern SEO. Bloomberg Businessweek in 2011 dubbed Cutts "a kind of Alan Greenspan of SEO," a reflection of how closely the industry parsed his every utterance. For an entire generation of SEOs, his face was the face of Google. Subsequently served as Administrator of the United States Digital Service from January 2017 to April 2021. The industry communicates with Google differently, and worse, without him. The bar for "Google employee who actually mattered to the SEO industry" was set by Cutts and has not been cleared since.
